Unusual encounters in Jaun, Gruyère

Ronny Mast is a wildlife filmmaker with several films to his credit. A native of the region, he spends most of his free time filming its wildlife. Deer, lynxes, wolves, griffon vultures, lammergeiers, black grouse: he knows their habits, knows where to see them without disturbing them, and captures their movements with his camera. Come and spend an afternoon with him for an introduction to wildlife observation. Unusual encounters await you during the hike, which will end with the screening of a film on the fauna of the Pre-Alps at Ronny’s home.

Stage 1

Starting point

We meet at 1.30pm in front of the Hôtel des Cascades parking lot in Jaun. Jaun can be reached by car from the Pays d’Enhaut via Bulle, Charmey or the Col du Jaun. Allow 1h from Lausanne or Bern, 1h30 from Neuchâtel or Sion, 2h15 from Geneva. Buses leave from Broc station.

Stage 2

Wildlife in Jaun

We’re off on a 1.5-hour hike through the forest, where we’ll make unusual encounters. You’ll have the chance to see, touch and maybe even listen to signs of animal life around you, while Ronny Mast explains what’s going on. It’s a chance you’ll have to seize, as image hunters are always discreet about their observation sites.

Stage 3

Back to Jaun

The return trip to Jaun is scheduled for 4.30pm, after a stop at the Jaun waterfall, the largest in the Pre-Alps and renowned for its regenerative properties. We’ll make our way to Ronny’s (3 minutes by car) for a screening of one of his wildlife films.

Eating a fondue in front of a breathtaking panorama, then spending the night in a tent at 2000 meters, is a pure dream. Thanks again to Jean Rémy for organizing this event and sharing his knowledge of mountains, flowers and geology in a timeless setting.

Jean Rémy led us on a wonderful hike into the heart of the Entlebuch Biosphere : from Restaurant Stäldeli high above beautiful alpine meadows, through high moors and sparse forests to the almost alpine looking summit of Schafmatt. Jean Rémy knows trees, flowers and birds as well as geology and geography. A true and interesting hike. Merci !

Jean Rémy organized a wonderful snowshoe walk in the Risoud forest. We really enjoyed the fondue stop in a woodcutter’s hut, followed by a visit to the Astroval astronomical observatory. Very original and much appreciated.

I’ve hiked the Salève countless times. But I rediscovered this mountain thanks to Jean Rémy’s skilful narration, mixing rock history, ammonite fossils and anecdotes about 19th-century Geneva geologists. Thank you JR for a thrilling hike!

Jean Rémy takes us on snowshoes to the heights of Grimentz in the direction of La Brinta. At the edge of the forest, we were shuffling through deep snow and admiring the nearby peaks. It was a wonderful discovery, away from the ski slopes.

Thanks to his meticulous preparation, Jean Rémy led us with ease on snowshoes through the Risoud forest above Le Brassus for over 6 hours. The atmosphere was magical. A memorable day that we wouldn’t have experienced on our own.

FAQ

Answers to your frequently asked questions

Take advantage of this hike to discover the rest of the Fribourg Pre-Alps, over a weekend for example!

An introduction to wildlife observation is of interest to young and old alike. Ronny Mast began living in harmony with nature at an early age. So there’s no age limit for this day out, especially as the hike is accessible to all, despite a good half-hour climb through the forest.

Definitely yes, especially if it continues into the evening with a meal at one of the many fine restaurants in the region, whether in Jaun or Charmey, for example. The only constraint remains the number of 8 people.
